In 1999, Drew and Susan Goss, the owners of the successful Zinfandel Restaurant in River North, began to look for a space to open a small neighborhood restaurant. After a two-year search, they found it—in their own West Town neighborhood. The Gosses opened West Town Tavern in 2001, intending to create an eatery embodying the spirit of an early American tavern—where the community could gather for food, drink, news, and gossip.
For the past few years, the Gosses’ dream has been a reality for residents of West Town and others looking for great food or a nice glass of wine. Starters include mussels roasted with garlic and chile peppers, and tavern beer cheese served with crunchy toasts. The main dishes provide many choices, from zinfandel-braised pot roast to pan-seared sea scallops with mushroom risotto and duck confit to a fresh herb-stuffed trout.
