Winter Canning and Pickling Class

  • Kendall College 900 North North Branch Street Chicago, IL, 60642 United States (map)

Returning just in time for a winter warm up activity: Slow Food Chicago's canning and preservation workshop series is back for a winter edition!

Kim Werst, Slow Food Chicago Board Member and Market Manager of the 61st Street Farmers Market and former Manager of the Logan Square Farmers Market will lead this intimate, hands-on workshop where attendees will learn the basics of home canning while preparing jam from locally grown and frozen fruit.

Topics covered will include :

  • low-acid vs. fruit preserves
  • pickling vs. freezing
  • food safety tips
  • proper storage and shelf life

Several recipes will be provided for participants to take home with them, in addition to the recipe created on site.

Tickets include equipment use and produce from Midwestern farmers. Each participant will leave with at least two jars of goodies to take home - not to mention the skills necessary to begin their own good food preservation projects. Spots have a history of filling up almost immediately, so don't waste a minute!
